Here's more of my Klara sketches. She's so much fun to draw. I'm not working on this story as much as a I want to at the moment, but there are more school projects to work on. There's a few busy, but exciting weeks ahead. I'll still try to keep throwing some updates around :)

24hr Comic Day!

Whoo! Last weekend I joined in with my class via Skype to take part in the 24hr Comic Day that was organized by my school.

To set up a challenge for myself I decided to draw with my left hand, using charcoal and working on A3 format. I only got up to 16 pages - drawing with your opposite hand does slow you down, but the story was pretty much finished anyway. It was lots of fun even if it ruins you the day after :p I'll be sure to join in again next time!

Here's a few drawings I've made of the 1940's-ish Hamburg. I need to practice drawing backgrounds etc. for my comic. Thanks to the online Hamburg Bildarchiv I've been able to collect hundreds of photo's that can help me out. Lately I've been working with charcoals a lot and I really came to like it. What I'm not too happy about is how they looked after scanning, but I'll share them anyway. Next time I'll be adding some details digitally, which already looks pretty nice in another project I've been drawing for. That's for later, though :)

Belletristik Illustration

The new issue of Belletristik magazine was released this weekend. As a first assignment of my internship I made an illustration for them to go with one of the poems. This is an illustration to the poem "Teichoskopie" by Alexander Makowka.

The work of my colleagues Sebastian and Maike is also in it. Be sure to check them out!

I apologize for the lack of updates this month. I've been working on a project and I can't publish anything of it yet, but I will once it's finished. Also I'll be sketching more and more for my project from now, so stay tuned...

Jamming preview

Since last month I've been working on a jamming comic with my friend, Abe. He posted a few of his panels, so here's some of mine. The jamming is a bit slow, because we have to mail back and forth (since I'm in Germany), but there's starting to be some action now.

I love the design Abe made for the main character and I really enjoy sketching her.

Some sketches I made in my sketchbook this July. I used this weekend to colour a few taking a closer look at usable colour-scemes.

And with that there's two more of the characters I want to use for my swing-band.

Well, only a very short one...

The next while I'll be diving head first into this project and I'll also take a closer look at the characters and their environment. For the comic I'm trying to find something that is not so much like the above, but a balance between digital and traditional work.

Live-sketches update

As the title says here are some of the sketches I made during jazz jam-sessions at the ponybar and Birdland in Hamburg. Basically we go there with a small group and draw whatever we see there. And pretty fast, too - since everythings swingin'.
First up are yesterdays sketches at Ponybar. At the bottom of this post are some of the drawings I made at Birdland last week (I didn't scan them untill today). Enjoy!

As for some more finished work: I'm colouring some stuff at the moment and I've been working on an illustration, but I can't post it untill it's published, which will be at the end of September.

Rainy days

What I do when I should be working on a assignment... I actually started with the nose with something completely different in mind and then it grew into this.

Tony (or Anton), a character of mine that I will use for an upcoming project. I'm having quite a tough time with his design, but it's good to practice drawing him for that reason :) Messing around with charcoals! It's a pretty tricky material and a lot of people I know hate it, but I admit that I like to use it from time to time. I love the texture it gives to a drawing.

Hagenbeck Tierpark

Here are some sketches I made at the Romantiknacht (13/08) at Hagenbeck Tierpark in Hamburg. It was very pretty with lots of classical music and performances everywhere. But also very crowded and not such a relaxing environment for me to make sketches, but some of them turned out okay no less. And while the sketching didn't really go as I expected I also took the time to walk around and enjoy my time there.

The llamas seemed pretty ~~artist friendly~~ lazy as well:

Dr. Sketchy 07-08-11

Yesterday I went to a Dr. Sketchy's anti art school-event with some people from my studio. I wasn't sure if I wanted to go, but I don't regret it. It was lots of fun. They had an anniversary of 4 years of Dr. Sketchy in Hamburg, so there was lots of celebration and fancy outfits.

Next time I'll be sure to bring some more materials, like ink or calligraphy pens, which I was stupid enough to forget this time *cough* I still managed to do okay with what I had. These two are my faves.

Last Monday I arrived in Hamburg for my 2,5 month internship! And man, I really like it here. It's such a beautiful city :) And there's still a lot more for me to see and experience here.
Today was my first day at the studio (Atelier 9) and this afternoon I finally managed to get this blog up and running to update it with with the work I'll be making here and any future projects or just quick sketches. My room is also very nice, not to mention close to my work. And as you can see, my roommates are very friendly:

As for the origin of this blog name: I give credit to my dear friend Abe for that one (do check his blog - he makes some crazy stuff). He wrote it on a shirt for me as a birthday/goodbye present. Swing because of my swing band project and love for the music and Bratwurst; well... for my stay in Germany. I'll be sure to wear it on my birthday!
